Youth Leadership Challenge Guidelines
DEADLINE TO APPLY – November 20, 2009.
Goals
The goals of the Green Street Youth Leadership Challenge are:
- To increase student engagement in environmental learning and action;
- To nurture a generation of caring and involved citizens; and
- To strengthen school-community partnerships to ensure quality of life for all citizens.
Objectives
To provide opportunities for students:
- To take action that builds on and strengthens their passion, commitment and caring;
- To lead in creative and unique ways that increase sense of self and awareness for others;
- To be recognized for the efforts and energy they invest in sustainable projects.
Requirements & Eligiblity
Mandatory requirements are:
- Projects must involve students in the K-12 Canadian public education system. Projects must not be individualized.
- Projects must include students in every step from development through to execution.
- Accepted projects will require the full signed endorsement of the school teacher or mentor, and the school principal.
- Funding will be paid directly to the school to defray expenses to support the project.
- Projects must be finalized by May 18, 2010.
- A final report must be submitted to Green Street by May 18, 2010.
- One
subsidy per school only.
- Green Street reserves the right to highlight projects on its Web site. Consent forms will be provided to the school upon acceptance of the project application.
Project applications that include the following characteristics are highly encouraged:
- Projects that have potential long-term results.
- Projects that stem from students who have participated in "Engaging in Our Communities as Global Citizens: A citizenship education initiative centred on the values of the environment, democracy, peace and solidarity"
Support & Mentorship
Green Street will offer the following support and mentorship to teachers and students:
- A web-based platform where teachers and students can exchange ideas and find out what’s happening in other areas of their region, province and country.
- A Youth Mentorship opportunity through the Green Street Youth Advisory Committee.
- A full support network through the Canadian Teachers’ Federation and the Centrale des syndicats du Québec.
Acknowledgements
All projects should acknowledge "Green Street / Ma rue verte", a not-for-profit program seeking to create a movement in schools centred on young people acting now and with other members of their community to create a sustainable future.
Funding
A maximum of $750.00 will be payable directly to the school. Full accountability is required at reporting.

Green Street is a not-for-profit program seeking to create a movement in schools centred on young people acting now, and with other members of their community, to create a sustainable future. Green Street is funded by the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation and administered by the Canadian Teachers’ Federation and the Centrale des syndicats du Québec.
The Youth Leadership Challenge is funded by the Vancouver Foundation. The project application must be developed with students, filled out by a teacher and funding is payable to the school.
Application deadline is November 20, 2009.
